You’re never too old for adventure” as Larkfield View resident takes to the waves at 92
3 weeks ago
It was a magical day out in Largs for residents of Greenock’s Larkfield View Care Home on Wednesday 13th August, but for 93-year-old May Gillies, it was nothing short of extraordinary, her first-ever speedboat ride!
The annual ‘Day Away’, led by Service Manager Elsie MacLennan and her team, saw over 120 residents, staff, and relatives enjoy a packed day of sunshine, seaside fun, music, and laughter. With ice creams at Nardini’s, fairground rides, and live music, the trip was already a highlight but it was May’s daring decision to step onto a red speedboat that captured everyone’s hearts.
Cheered on by crowds on the promenade, May returned from the ride beaming. She laughed:
“My son is 63 and he would never do anything like this, wait till he hears I’ve done it and I’m 93!”
Holmes Care Group Regional Operations Manager, Jamie Brown, said:
“In true Larkfield View style, the day was packed with joy, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Residents were not just enjoying the fair, they were on the rides! This is more than just a fun day out, it’s a powerful example of person-centred care in action, something Elsie and her team excel at.”
Larkfield View Care Home Service Manager Elsie MacLennan added:
“Seeing May’s joy on the speedboat, Alex’s and the other resident’s happiness waving from the fairground elephants, and everyone dancing at the party - this is what life is about. Our residents were sparkling, and we’re proud to support them in making memories that will last forever.”
She continued, “I’d like to say a special thank you to Clark Memorial Church who allow us to take over their fabulous facilities and to McGills who kindly donated one of their coaches for a 3rd year to ensure we had enough transport for everyone, to the Clark Memorial Church for being a fantastic base for our day, to Angela Duncan, a wonderful singer who performs at our home but has also not missed one of our away days to entertain the residents and to all our lovely staff and families for making it so special.”
The day was rounded off with singing, dancing, and traditional fish and chips before heading home, with residents, families, and staff already looking forward to next year.
